National Railways passenger Corporation, doing business as Amtrak / amtrak /, is a service of the US passenger rail partially funded by the government. It is operated and managed as a non-profit company, and provides medium and long-distance intercity services in the United States. Amtrak was established in 1971 through the consolidation of government funding of most passenger rail companies in the US before.
Amtrak operates more than 300 trains each day over 21,300 miles (34,000 kilometers) of track with selected segments operating speed of 150 mph civil (240 km / h) and connected to over 500 destinations in additional 46 countries for three Canadian provinces. In FY 2014, Amtrak served 30.9 million passengers and had $ 2.189 billion of revenue while employing more than 20,000 people. Nearly two-thirds of the passengers come from urban areas and 83% of the ten largest in terms of passengers traveling on the route of 400 miles or less. The name "Amtrak" is a compound word of "America" and "trak", the latter itself a sensational spell of "tracking".
From the mid-19th century until about 1920, nearly all intercity travelers in the United States by rail. Historically, the US passenger train was owned and operated by the private company operating the cargo ship. Approximately 65,000 passenger rail cars operating in 1929.
From 1920 to the late 20th century, popular passenger rail's decline and made a series of pullbacks and recovery is expected. Revenue passenger rail significantly decreased between 1920 and 1934 because of the rise of the automobile. In the same time, many travelers have been lost to companies interstate buses like Greyhound. However, in the mid-1930s, railroads rekindle popular imagination with service improvements and, streamliners new diesel engines, such as sparkling silver Pioneer Zephyr and Yankee fly. Even with these improvements, on a relative basis, traffic continued to decline, and in 1940 the railway line was held 67 percent passenger-miles in the United States.
WWII explosive instability; passenger traffic increased sixfold thanks troop movements and restrictions on automobile fuel. After the war, rejuvenated rail overwork and streamliners fleet with fast and often forgotten luxury - the epitome of the Super Chief and California Zephyr - which inspired the last big rise in trip passenger rail.
The revival after the war was short. In 1946, passenger trains are less than 45 percent compared with 1929, and the rapid decline despite rising optimism rail.
