About AthletaAthleta plans to open its first store in Chicago next year as the retailer of women's activewear expanded beyond its roots catalog.
The direct merchant, owned since 2008 by Gap Inc., has agreed to open a 3,800 square meter store at 3415 N. Southport Ave., said Callie Canfield, a spokewoman for San Francisco Gap. The store is expected to open in the first half of 2012.
Athleta began rolling out the brick and mortar stores in August. It operates eight: two in New York, one in Philadelphia and one in Washington DC and four in California. A Minneapolis outpost is expected to open this month and a store in Westchester, NY, is scheduled for January.
Gap CEO Glenn Murphy said at an investor conference this year that he saw the gap operate 50 stores Athleta 2013.
"We are very excited about the Chicago market and are looking for other opportunities to shop there," Canfield said, "but no other spaces have been confirmed at this time."
Athleta began in 1998 as a donut shop style yoga, golf apparel and clothing run for women. It competes with Lululemon Athletica and Nike.
