The inspiration was their honeymoon in Europe, where the Segals became interested in supplying products aesthetic functionality to young couples just starting out. Surprised to see that Europe has many beautiful and reliable products with reasonable prices, they were inspired to open their own shop in the United States.
The first store opened in response to a flourishing of world trade in home furnishings from the early 1960s negotiations on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The Segals find small companies in Europe that do not have representatives in the US and negotiating purchase directly from the factory can be sold to consumers while avoiding the mark of a wholesaler. To this day, a large part of Crate & Barrel's products are imported directly from Europe, although Thai, glass and textiles Mexico and India can also be found in their stores.
The company derives its name Segals with the documents that they originally used to display items in a store in Chicago. The initial Segals will call their company "Barrel and Crate", but a friend suggested that they reverse the order of the words. They flip the barrels and barrels that goods arrive, let excelsior wood extrusion, and stacked up China and glassware. This helped emphasize the strongest selling points of them, that their products are imported directly.
In 1966, Segal and designers visiting the Big Habkirk study design store in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which has a "huge influence" on how to access their retail. Habkirk then commented: "Finally we took the whole idea and translate it into a formula to reproduce."
In 1968, the Segals open their second store in the shopping center Plaza del Lago in suburban Wilmette, Illinois, and third in Oak Brook, Illinois in 1971. The first store outside the Chicago Open in Boston in 1977. In 1979, it opened the Cambridge, Massachusetts its second store in the building designed for the recently closed design study, but they were greatly admired.
By 1985, the chain had grown to 17 stores, and continues to grow. In March 1995, it first opened its New York location (its 59th position), in Manhattan. After selling a majority stake to the mail-order company Otto Group Germany in 1998, the company has the financial resources to increase the rate of development. (Otto became sole owner in 2011.
